Common uses for Validyne Pressure Sensors and Data Acquisition Systems in the automotive industry
Engine Air Filter Drop
Diesel and gasoline engines require a lot of air as part of the internal combustion process. Anyone who has lifted the hood on their automobile knows that the air coming into a vehicle engine is filtered to keep out road dust and grit from entering the engine cylinders. All vehicles have an air filter for this purpose and these are commonly made of a paper filtration material, are housed in a plastic or metal can, and can be opened easily for filter replacement.
When automobile doors are closed it is expected that the sealing surfaces around the edges of the door will contact the frame properly so that the passenger cabin is weatherproof and the inside protected from rain and water. With all the different styles of doors, frames and gasket materials each new model must be tested to verify that the sealing system is effective.
Does synthetic oil reduce bearing wear? Do gasoline additives really improve combustion? These questions are investigated in a special laboratory known as an engine test cells. There are many pressure measurements needed on an engine: oil pressure, exhaust pressure, coolant pressures and any number of emission pressure measurements. Pressure transducers must be protected from the ambient environment of the test cell and still provide useful signals to a data acquisition system.

POPULAR AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS
Validyne products most prevalent in the Automotive Industry
P55 Pressure Transducer
With extreme resistance to shock and vibration, the compact P55 delivers the same high-level performance expected from more delicate differential pressure transducers. With variable reluctance sensing technology, the P55 delivers fast dynamic response, high resistance to vibration and superior signal stability through ambient temperature change for a wide variety of low-pressure measurements.
The Validyne model P66 is a digital differential pressure transmitter designed for industrial pressure measurement applications. Communication via CAN Bus provides remote zero and span adjustment as well as digital pressure readings in engineering units or pressure counts. The P66 provides digital readings directly in engineering units of psi or inches of water column.
The P895 is designed for a wide variety of pressure measurements where high resistance to vibration and superior stability through temperature change is required. The zero and full-scale output calibrations are set by the potentiometer adjustments accessible from the top cover.
The P61 is designed for a wide variety of low pressure measurements where high resistance to vibration and superior stability through temperature change is required. The P61 will accept both liquids and gases directly at the sensing diaphragm. The P61 provides USB digital readings directly in engineering units.
The Vehicle Pressure Acquisition System (VPAS) is designed to record and display up to 8 or 16 low pressure measurement points for the investigation of vehicle pressures within the passenger cabin, in HVAC ducting or with respect to the exterior of the vehicle.
The Validyne VDAS integrates all your data acquisition requirements for vehicle testing into one compact, rugged system. Up to 300 vehicle sensor channels can be accepted by the VDAS so that time consuming change-outs of instrumentation packages can be minimized. The same VDAS is easily shared by several test groups; system configurations can be saved and re-loaded as needed.
The Validyne model P855 is a high accuracy pressure transducer with a Serial 485 interface. Designed for a wide variety of low pressure to high pressure measurements where fast dynamic response, high resistance to vibration and superior signal stability through temperature change is required. The serial port allows remote zero and span adjustments as well as readings in engineering units of pressure and temperature.
The Universal Data Acquisition System(UDAS) Sensor Interface provides real world data acquisition for your PC via the USB port. 16 sensor inputs in any mix or combination are accepted by the UDAS. No external signal conditioning is required. The UDAS includes configuration and data acquisition software. Thermocouples, RTDs, strain gages, LVDTs, potentiometers, VR sensors and low-level DC voltages are wired directly to the USB terminals in any mix or combination of single-ended or differential input types. All required excitation, amplification and linearization is provided by the UDAS. No additional equipment is required.
I have been purchasing P55/SU63 from Validyne for almost 10 years now. My Rep there, Deepak Trisal, has demonstrated what good service and support really is. Never boasting about the superior service and attention to detail he and Validyne offer, they just do it! Very rare in our industry these days, I always look forward to working with Validyne, they are, indeed, the real deal!
